1963 - Succeeded in domestic production of “Canned Motor Pumps”
Supporting the petrochemical industry that served as an engine for high economic growth
During the postwar high economic growth period, Japan became an economic power with a GNP (gross national product) that was the world's second largest among capitalist states in 1968. The remarkable progress of the petrochemical industry is one of the factors that contributed to an unprecedented rise from the ashes. Petrochemical manufacturers, who succeeded in mass production of new materials such as plastic, chemical fibers and synthetic rubber from petroleum at low cost, have drastically changed society and our lives. Chemical fibers changed the role of “clothing”, and construction materials and various residential use products changed the whole concept of “residence”. Without petrochemical technology, the widespread proliferation of televisions and automobiles may not have been achieved.
Nikkiso has provided a wide variety of specialized pumps since the beginning of the petrochemical industry. Our proprietary completely leak-free “Canned Motor Pumps (Non-Seal Pumps)” supported the development of the industry while contributing to ensured safety and environmental protection.
Succeeded in the world's first commercialization of “completely leak-free ‘Canned Motor Pumps'”
In expectation of demand expansion for leak-free pumps, Nikkiso started domestic production of “Canned Motor Pumps” through technical cooperation with U.S. company Chem Pump Corporation in 1956.
In petrochemical and general chemical industry fields handling dangerous liquid, the Canned Motor Pump, having an enclosed structure in which the pump section and the motor section are integrated, is an ideal pump. However, since the carbon bearing supporting the rotating shaft was provided inside the pump, it was difficult to check the state of abrasion from outside, and the motor had a weak point in which the motor would stop abruptly due to seizure. Since Chem Pump was not able to solve this problem, we ended technical cooperation with Chem Pump.
To solve these problems, we decided to pursue the development on our own. By installing the “bearing monitor”, capable of detecting bearing abrasion, we completed the world's first completely leak-free pump at a practical level in 1963, and brought the product to the market under the name of “Non-Seal Pump”.
The long-standing problem was overcome by developing the “E monitor”
Our “bearing monitor” significantly contributed to the enhanced safety and preventive maintenance of petrochemical complexes.
The monitor has been improved continually and its evolutionary extension is “E monitor”, which is currently used.
The “E monitor” is designed to electrically detect and display abrasion of the carbon bearing in real time through the search coil embedded in the motor.
The “Non-Seal Pump” with the breakthrough function was welcomed enthusiastically by the petrochemical and general chemical industries that were plagued by liquid leakage from pumps.
Application engineering is also an important point for “Non-Seal Pumps” designed for special purposes.
The liquids and chemicals in use vary widely and so do their chemical properties. With application engineering based on abundant experience in the past, we identify proper materials and structure, responding to each case in a form of completely built-to-order production. Thus, hundreds of thousands of custom-built “Non-Seal Pumps” contributed to the development of the petrochemical and general chemical industries, indirectly supporting the economic growth of Japan.
